91¸£ÀûÍø student raises £100k for charity

BSc Computer Sciences student and 91¸£ÀûÍø Squash President, Ben Green, has raised  £100K for different causes as the Raising and Giving (RAG) officer for Team UoP. Ben has been awarded the Outstanding Contribution prize during the 2025 University Sport Award, recognising his fundraising efforts. He was also the student coach at the annual university Student vs Staff charity football match, which raised £12,000.

This is what Ben has to say about his time as the RAG officer for Team UoP.

When did you start fundraising?

I started my fundraising journey in 2022 as the RAG officer for the Squash club that I am a member of. Then in 2023, I became the Team UoP RAG officer, which means that I oversaw all of the fundraising and RAG efforts from the different university sports clubs.

How have you raised such an incredible figure?

Part of the RAG officer role includes running campaigns, not only is it supporting clubs to enhance their events’ success, but it also brings everyone together for events such as Movember, Yellow Week, which is for Sophie's Legacy – a local charity, and Red Week for the British Heart Foundation, and working closely with all the sports clubs to really push these campaigns. Each year's RAG officers are different, so allowing them the creativity in their role and working with them to see what works best for their clubs has been important to me.

I think bringing everyone together for a good cause and encouraging recurring successful events from previous years, whilst also pushing the boat out and attempting new fundraising methods, is what led to a successful RAG year for me.

What motivates you?

To be honest, helping these other RAG officers to feel accomplished in their role is the main reward. They are all so aspirational and have fantastic fundraising goals. Whilst it is great to bring everyone together to get behind a charity, it is also amazing to see everyone off doing their own thing for their clubs, yet still pushing and raising money for good causes.

What's next on the cards?

Next up is all about passing the baton on for me. It is the end of my final year, and I am moving away from 91¸£ÀûÍø. It's now all about allowing someone else to experience this fantastic opportunity that I have had for the past 2 years. I have been very focused on financial donations, but there is so much more to RAG than just money donated to charities. Whilst that is great, it would be nice to see someone else's approach in this role, where they can push the role further and really widen the impact achieved.
